Conservation and characterization of grape cultivars relevant for Piedmont

The programme, in cooperation with two local bodies, is aimed to the preservation and the enhancement of the regional grape genetic resources through conservation, characterization and evaluation of wine grape varieties grown in the field collection established at Grinzane Cavour.  The current activity consists in the transfer of the maintained materials by replanting in a new experimental plot nearby, thus rationalizing the old collection, especially in the preservation of healthy virus status. On the old collection, where mature vines are still grown, vine morphology, phenology and cultural features and still monitored. The Institute of Plant Virology, responsible for the introduction of all the accessions maintained (700 accessions) and collection curator, addresses the establishment of the new vineyard, analyzes the accession virus status and coordinates all the scientific activities carried out in the collection including result dissemination.
