I miei interessi attuali sono principalmente legati allo studio della risposta delle piante alle infezioni virali. I modelli in studio sono la specie pomodoro e i virus TSWV (tospovirus, genoma RNA) e TYLCSV (geminivirus, genoma DNA). Le alterazioni dell’espressione genica legate all’infezione vengono analizzati utilizzando approcci di trascrittomica (microarray, qRT-PCR, siRNA-seq) e bioinformatica.

In campo le piante sono normalmente colonizzate da microrganismi simbionti, che hanno una influenza sullo stato di salute della pianta anche rispetto ad infezioni da patogeni. Per questo abbiamo un progetto che intende comprendere se l’interazione simbiotica tra piante di pomodoro e da funghi micorrizici-arbuscolari ha una influenza nel processo di infezione da virus. Lo studio è condotto analizzando l’espressione genica e studiando la regolazione dei fitormoni.

Recentemente sono state caratterizzate molecole ricombinanti tra due specie di Begomovirus (TYLCSV e TYLCV) in campioni  accolti in coltivazioni di pomodoro in Sicilia e Sardegna. Il processo di ricombinazione è molto rapido e potrebbe portare a varianti virali di maggiore virulenza.

Un altro ambito di ricerca riguarda la resistenza a virus, ottenuta sia mediante modificazione genetica del genoma vegetale (piante trasgeniche, OGM), che mediante tecniche di miglioramento genetico tradizionale (breeding). Obiettivi del lavoro sono stati TSWV e TYLCSV. Questa attività ha condotto al brevetto internazionale di una strategia antivirale contro i geminivirus.
